Expectation is a word that captures hope.
Luke 3:15 “And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not…”|
John 1:4-7 “In him was life; and the life was the light of men. [5] And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. [6] There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. [7] The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.”
From the scriptures above we see how John came to bear witness to ‘the’ Light, that all men through him might believe. This shows that it is possible for light to come but we do not believe. This means that witnesses can come to us but if we cannot believe them, then we cannot receive their testimony. John was among the people, but they did not believe him because to them he was a common man. And since the people could not receive John, they were unable to receive the Father, Jesus. There are things that can cause us to be blind, and of such is familiarity. Familiarity can hinder us from receiving. The people in the days of Jesus knew Him as the carpenter's son and thus, could not receive of Him. They had become too familiar. Although the people boasted that they had already received the witness of Moses and Abraham, their way of life showed otherwise.
There are witnesses in our day and they are men sent to give us light, we would be wise to see them as God’s mercy to us and receive their testimony.
Sometimes we kick against that which is God’s mercy to us. We can become so familiar that blindness sets in and we are unable to see the witness of God to us in plain sight.
If we do not believe that sons of God are arising in our day, in our pastors, if we do not believe that they are Christlike, it will be difficult to receive the reward that they carry. God in His wisdom has wrapped lights in the bowels of the darkness in Nigeria, that is, though it seemed dark in the nation, unrighteousness all around, we see God’s mercy in that His word is still being proclaimed. We must ask Him for help to see His mercies and His goodness.
There are things that we see in the natural that leaves us in awe. There is a tendency for us to follow the darkness (civilisation) of the earth and exalt it as light. This is the ways of the world, imaginations of the heart, the way of Cain. We exalt this as light not knowing it is gross darkness and iniquities buried in the soul.
We must ask God to open our eyes so that we may see His ways as we ought to, to know the way as we ought to, and to have His writings inside our souls to comprehend the mystery of godliness. The mystery of godliness is that God is come in the flesh.
The reason many of us listened to messages as much as we did during COVID is because of the fear that was in the atmosphere. We have found mercy to come and hear God’s word. And the men whom the Lord has raised are witnesses or angels of light. Men who are decked in meekness. To be clothed in meekness and array of Christ; these are ambitions we should have for our souls.
The reward of Sarah was not Isaac, if it was, then Haggai had greater boast than her but their reward was that they came into faith. They were already receiving their reward before their child came. Our reward is not something that men regard and can mimic, rather, it is God being formed in men – godliness in the flesh.
We must pray to discern the ministers God has prepared as we build expectations. Otherwise, we would see them in the familiarity of our natural sight, as they are prophets and angels of light that the Lord has sent to us.
